Later in this century, Europe, Africa and parts of Asia will eventually see spring equinoxes on March 19.īut for 2021, it will revert to the more usual March 20 – and we hope a return to the gathering of crowds to marvel at the majesty of the timeless rhythms of nature. The bottom line is get used to more 19ths! Every coming leap year (2024, 2028, etc.) will give us a new “earliest” spring equinox. The Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere occurs twice a year around 20 March (the spring equinox) and around 22 September (the autumn equinox). It involves how leap years, leap centuries, the Gregorian calendar and the speed of the Earth’s rotation don’t precisely align and how and when we make periodic adjustments to sync things up as much as possible. Why? Well, that’s even more complicated than figuring out which day it is. You have to go back to 1896 to get such an early equinox, according to the Farmers Almanac. Around the date of the equinox the Sun heats above and below the equator equally and, therefore. The March equinox occurs in the Northern Hemisphere between the dates of March 19 to 21 followed by the Summer solstice - June 20 to 22 and then the September equinox - September 21 to 23 and finally the Winter solstice - December 20 to 23. If you’re surprised that spring equinox is not falling on the 20th or 21st, it’s for good reason. The 2015 vernal equinox took place on 20 March at 22:45 UTC. You get that truly equal day/night split a few days before the official spring equinox. This bending of light rays “causes the sun to appear above the horizon when the actual position of the sun is below the horizon.” The day is a bit longer at higher latitudes than at the equator because it takes the sun longer to rise and set the closer you get to the poles. How does that happen? As the US National Weather Service explains, the “nearly” equal hours of day and night are because of the complex way a sunrise is measured and the refraction of sunlight in our atmosphere. It turns out you actually get a little more daylight than darkness on the equinox, depending where you are on the planet. Fall equinox for 2020 is here - that day when you get equal amounts of daylight and darkness. The term equinox comes from the Latin word “equinoxium,” meaning “equality between day and night.” And vernal also comes from Latin and means spring. I suspect the software MQA decoding algorithm in Audirvana is no match for the hardware decoding of the Dragonfly, but Audirvana’s handling of CD-quality lossless music is unmatched. On the other hand, The Dragonfly has hardware MQA decoding, which probably makes all the difference. The Tidal iOS app is no match for Audirvana Plus and my iMac, and as good as the Audioengine speakers are, they’re no match for the Beyerdynamic TP1s. One major difference then versus now, however, was that when I listened before at work, my DAC was an Audioquest Dragonfly Black 1.5 driven by an iPhone 6s+, connected to a pair of Audioengine A2+ speakers. However, that was not my previous experience with Tidal when I listened a couple of years ago. The MQA versions sounded flat, lacking in depth, bandwidth and soundstage. MQA vs Lossless: The first big surprise was that the lossless tracks sounded considerably better than the same tracks in MQA. The differences in sound quality were striking and in a way, surprising. I didn’t do random blinded testing, as the results were not subtle. All of the Tidal tracks were 16 bit / 44.1kHz, with a few of them also in MQA. I also have Weather Report in DSD64 for comparison. The Qobuz and local tracks were identical in resolution - 24 bit / 44.1kHz, 96kHz and 192kHz. The only requirement was that all tracks be available on Tidal and Qobuz as well as in my library. I selected several tracks for my test spanning a wide variety of music types - including tracks by Bach and Tchaikovsky, Miles Davis, Weather Report and Wayne Shorter, Frank Sinatra and Willie Nelson, The Beatles, The Carpenters, David Bowie, Hozier, Weezer and Daft Punk. Because my wife has sensitive hearing, however, most of my critical listening is done with headphones. The film does not star any professional actors like any of the New wave Cinema, Martin LaSalle plays the title role, Michel, a circumstance-torn youngster who had no other option except looting for his survival. Seven years after the end of Italian neo-realism, Ten years after the Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves. The film got released in France in the year 1959 during the early years of the French New wave Cinema. It is a 60-year-old cult classic that defines (more or less) the science of Robert Bresson. Pickpocket is the first Bresson film I had watched completely. I had just found Bresson, I do not have the experience of being a Bresson fan. Yes ! most of the times, we don't have music the music remains silent, and waits ( something unusual in those days of film-making ) yet, this small appearance of music, is fitting and timely. Knowing these references, is a suspension itself some kind of fear. There are some references to" Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment" like the basic similarities between the heroes : Michel and Raskolnikov who both tend to commit crimes both being lonely and isolated and even the hole behind Michel's bed he use to hide the stolen valuable goods ( like Dostoyevsky's hero ). Another point is that Bresson never lets the main character to show fear and anxiety ( unlike Hitchcock who loves to do so ) instead he depends on images and sounds to supply the fear : sound of footsteps, images of shaking hands and cold faces ( the opening scene ), door handle turned quietly and actually anything. It is true that use of music is not considerable in this film, but we can't renounce the sound effects here. ![]() Also there is a scene in which the main character is walking anxiously in a crowded sidewalk we can not hear the sounds, the street noise and even the cars the only sound is his footsteps, which makes suspension. For example, in some occasions, a sound or noise, inform us of the occurrence of an incident or repeating a sound in another scene can mitigate the effect of suspension. Even, some think that sound editing in this movie, decrease the suspension in some scenes and increase it in some other scenes. Yes ! Suspension is a key factor here and not a regular kind of suspension but a Bresson type. The cinematography, lighting and playing with shadows and lights in this movie is truly delicate and these factors in addition to a cold open and sort of suspension, forms the idea of a thriller movie. There is a deep coldness in this style of performance which makes it surprisingly and paradoxically acceptable and fits well in the world of the movie particularly, sympathetic face of the main character which increases contributes in this plausibility. But we can't reject his way of acting ( in fact, not acting ). In this movie, the cast and specially the hero are totally flat and expressionless even his walking style is sort of flat. In other words he wants them " not to act ". He wants the actors ( as a matter of fact he uses non-professional actors after his second movie ) to act deliberately and be aware of a witness called camera. Bresson says himself that " if possible, he prefers to utilize an image, a sound, and any other elements ( and metaphors ) instead of actors ". In fact, because of non-naturalistic quality of the plot, we can't sympathize with him and what makes him even more distant, is the Bresson's personal touch and fond of "deadpan acting and not showing emotions ". main character, there is a gap, a distance, between us ( audience ) and the film. And from one of the most basic elements of the story, i.e. He feels humiliated to do regular jobs and thus, begins pocket picking. He defines justice for himself as " some people have the privilege to break the laws, willingly ". Pickpocket is about an alone and desperate writer who think of himself as a superior to the society He thinks he is better than others and believes to be in the right of breaking the rules and neglecting the social Contract. Pickpocket ( 1959 ), is one his best and most thoughtful films and has a key role in recognizing both Bresson and his works. ![]() But when we are aware of his elaborate work and subtlety, we admire his skill, undoubtedly. It would be hard for a regular movie-watcher, some one who just watches for fun, to like the movies made by formalist, strictly stylist director, Robert Bresson.
